Chelsea transfer news: Chelsea joined by Juventus in Moussa Dembele transfer race as Maurizio Sarri eyes striker

Chelsea transfer news

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard faces competition from Juventus in the race to sign Lyon striker Moussa Dembele during the January transfer window, as Maurizio Sarri aims to beat his former side to his signature.

Chelsea have been joined by Juventus in the race to sign Moussa Dembele from Lyon. Frank Lampard has been keen to recruit Dembele this month, after back-up striker Olivier Giroud reportedly agreed a deal with Inter Milan.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the French forward as a replacement for Giroud.

Lampard is trying to recruit Dembele this month.

After Tottenham emerged as shock candidates to land Dembele on Friday, the Blues now also face competition from Juventus.

The Italian champions want to sign the Lyon striker to relieve some of the pressure on Cristiano Ronaldo, according to The Sun.

Ronaldo has scored 15 goals in all competitions this season. Juventus’ next top goalscorer is Paulo Dybala with eight.

Chelsea sent scouts to watch Dembele on Wednesday night, but they’ll need to move fast to sign him.

Lampard admitted that Chelsea have been watching the Lyon star.

But, he claimed Dembele was just one of a number of players the club were tracking.

“[Dembele’s] a player I know and a player the club know,” Lampard said.

“But I’m surprised to see his name pop up so regularly when it’s not popping up in my conversations.

“There’s quite a few players in the last week I can say the same about.

“He’s a player I respect. We’re speaking about strengthening goal-scorers – that’s where we’ve been found pretty short in home games recently.

“I don’t want to go cut and dried on anybody. He’s not one that we’re openly talking about.

“If there’s a decision then I’ll be a big part of that decision.”

The Chelsea boss added that the club won’t be forced into signing any new players, even if Giroud does leave Stamford Bridge.

Michy Batshuayi is also being linked with a move away from Chelsea, meaning Lampard may only have Tammy Abraham as a recognised striker after the transfer window.

“No, we do not necessarily need to bring someone in if Oli moves,” Lampard added.

“With Oli, the situation is if it is right for everybody, first and foremost that's us the club, because he is under contract, then we will look at whether he will leave the club.

“He has been a great professional here. He has trained brilliantly through this season even without many opportunities. So I hold him in high regard in that respect but I still have to make a decision for the football club and nothing is done yet.

“Everyone is talking about it so I am not going to beat around the bush. His agent has spoken to the club, but until we decide it is the right thing then it is not done.”
